Clever People: Rabia Lockwood from Ginny & Jude Designs

Some people you just click with, others well, let's just say it becomes awkward. This week's Clever People feature is a quirky lady we instantly connected with, designer Rabia Lockwood. We have known Rabia for a little over a year, not long in the grand scheme of things,  but we can honestly say that whilst the majority of our relationship was developed via email, she is definitely a good friend of ours. When spending time with Rabia three things are apparent - she is hilariously funny, she is an old soul at heart and she has the loveliest style we ever did see! So it's no wonder then, that she is the creative superwoman behind the accessories and design label Ginny & Jude Designs. Her pieces scream nostalgia chic and will instantly transport you to a time where elegance, poise and charm were sought after. Ginny & Jude Designs will be attending the Finders Keepers Market, this Friday night and Saturday at the Carriage Works Eveleigh in Sydney. A perfect opportunity to experience her little pieces of fancy!

Who are you, what do you do and what is your weapon of choice?
I am Rabia Lockwood, Director of accessories and design label Ginny & Jude Designs. My weapon of choice is a pair of tweezers - when it comes to fine delicate work, they are no end of useful.

Where do you get inspiration for your craft?
Absolutely everywhere - someone looking pretty special walking down the street, the colours and shapes of leaves, song I hear, the fashion of yesteryear as it was advertised and printed in magazines of the time and the rather old fashioned idea, that as long as the foundations of your outfit are chic, then you can pull of some truly wild accessories.

You are every facet of your business, truly a one woman show. What motivates you?
Making lovely things so that discerning people can look special is motivation enough! I will also confess to an absolute inability to sit still and relax, so inertia is often very motivating. If the time comes where I can no longer think of interesting things to make, then I suppose it's all over. . .

If you could give your teenage self one piece of advice what would it be?
Simply not to worry too much, everything works out in the end. . . and I would assure myself that boys get heaps better after you leave high school.

If you were in hell what song would be playing on loop?
If they were to play house music, any house music on a loop or otherwise, I would be very unhappy.

Write a caption to this photo.

"Mr and Mrs Phlegge demonstrate knee-hopping, the latest dance craze to sweep suburban America."

And lastly what is your favourite piece from you new collection - Lastyear's kisses?
Oooh, this is hard. . . I certainly love the knitted knickers; I have had a rather strange desire for knitted knickers for some time, so to have them come to life is just wonderful and the warm colours and soft texture of the wool is just perfect. I also really love the Dearest Sophisticate wing headpiece. It's a deceptively simple piece - I can tell you that it is rather difficult getting all those feathers to sit in descending order just so! I am getting better and more patient at restoring these old pieces though, and this one is a good example of a well honed craft and it sits so perfectly on your head!

Clever People: Sharnayla Page

Model extraordinaire and good friend to S+S, Sharnayla Page is somewhat of a dark horse. Not only is she a stunner in front of the camera she also has some pretty boss creative talents (yes we said boss!). Her plethora of amazing skills are our third feature in our new blog series Creative People.

Who are you, what do you do and what is your weapon of choice?
My name is Sharnayla Page which is pronounced Sharn and then Kayla without the K. Im a girl and I love stopping time in a photograph or drawing. My weapon of choice is my nifty Canon 50D and for painting, acrylic on canvas.

What are three things people don't know about you?
1. I love chilli. I like it hot, very very hot.
2. I can sleep for 12 hours a night.
3. I was the monster under your bed when you were growing up!

If you were in hell what song would be playing on loop?
Oh that's easy - Stairway to heaven by Led Zepplin. I hate that song.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?
People inspire me for my paintings and photographs. In my paintings I like to capture them in their worst state, it's realistic and humorous and in my photographs anything that intrigues me at the time, but I do enjoy shooting girls with little clothes on.

You take photos, paint, draw and have a wicked bad singing voice. If you could do only one of these things for the rest of your life what would you do?
Ok that's a hard one. Well for as long as I can remember I have enjoyed illustration and painting. Photography and playing the ukulele are more recent hobbies, so I would probably do photography for the rest of my life, it's still fresh.

Where can we find your art?

Clever People: Adam James Turnbull

The second part of our new blog series Clever People features a talented artist and friend who's creative abilities constantly blow our minds. Adam James Turnbull has been honing his skills for years now and his artworks and illustrations have been featured around the world. He was kind enough to take some time out of his busy day to answer a few of our questions.

Who are you, what do you do and what is your weapon of choice?
My name is Adam James Turnbull and I am an illustrator and graphic designer. I run a small design studio called Vacation Creative and I'm also represented for my illustrations by Colagene in Europe, Canada and America.

My weapon of choice would be my Wacom tablet. Most of my things these days are totally digital and without this little thing I would be lost.

Where do you get your inspiration for your craft?
Everywhere and everything - internet, books, weather, people. It generally depends on the job.

2012 is looming, what do you look forward to this year?
I hear the world is going to end in 2012, I'm looking forward to explosions. But I'm also looking forward to illustrating more, a solo exhibition of a collection of work from the past few years as well as working on my studio, Vacation.

What is the biggest lesson you have learnt in life thus far?
Everything will always work out, so long as you keep at it.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Skagen, Denmark one of my favourite places I've been and I plan to go back and live a summer there.

If you could be a cereal, what would you be?
Muesli, a little mix of everything.

Where can we find your work?

Clever People: Tilly Leahy

Tilly Leahy is one of those infectious people that you are drawn to. She is crazy funny and always has some amazing fact about the most obscure of things. She is a very talented photographer and is so very close to graduating from the prestigious UNSW College of Fine Arts. A good friend of S+S, last year she helped us out (with another clever kid Sarah Kukathas) with our S/S 10/11 lookbook. Tilly was kind enough to be the guinea pig in our new blog series where we get to know some very talented people that you may or may not have already heard of, but either way we think are ace!

Who are you, what do you do and what is your weapon of choice?
My name is Tilly Leahy and I have a Canon 5D, but I have a love of film cameras.

Where do you get inspiration for your photography?
Peoples faces. I have a great love of people's faces. A photograph allows you to keep a moment maybe just a flicker, to preserve a tiny expression we use and take for granted all the time. Photographs are a great thing they allow a second to be frozen. We don't live forever, some of us may want too but we don't.  Fuck sometimes it's hard to know if you are still alive (especially if you work in hospitality). We change and grow everyday. Why not capture and cage your favourite moments, which I bet will be to do with someone else's face, and keep that.
2012 is looming, what do you look forward to this year?
To be interviewed by Andrew Denton and be on Australian Story and to be in the Olympics for Show Jumping. Babes - I would like 2012 to be the year of the babe, but ooh I don't know, I don't think you can know. So much can change in a year. To be honest it would be great to know, but then I think, no way in hell I would or could know.
Can you please give us some love advice?

You have to make out with people while listening to Katy Perry. ITS AWESOME! A
lso there is no purpose as long as you have fun whatever it is you do, do it as long as you have fun. And make out with Katy Perry, if you can make out with Katy Perry, then you do not need any love advice. I would like some love advice from you, you Katy Perry maker-outerer

Do like Gerard Depardieu?

I have no idea who he is.
